I think I’m Neurodivergent…Should I Get Tested? Advice From an Neurodivergent Therapist
Written by: Melissa Light, LPC, NCC, PMH-C
Have you ever felt you didn’t fit in, but weren’t exactly sure why? Do you look around at how others are doing things and wonder if you are working harder than you need to be? Maybe you are able to manage work or engage in socializing but come home exhausted and unable to care for yourself. While everyone has moments where they experience these feelings, if there are areas of your life you feel are a constant struggle, they deserve a closer look. These challenges might be signs of underlying neurodivergence, and finding support through neurodivergent therapy in Atlanta, GA can provide valuable insights and tools to help you navigate life with greater ease and understanding.
What is “Neurodivergence”?
Neurodivergence is a term referring to a brain that is functioning differently than typical brain functioning, including ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) and autism among many others. Neurodiversity is the recognition that people experience and interact with the world in a variety of ways. Some of the characteristics of autism and ADHD overlap, and they both can include differences from neurotypical brains in communication, sensory processing, and emotion regulation.
What Can Help Me Decide if I Want to Get Tested For Being Neurodivergent?
If you’re an adult who has never received an autism or ADHD diagnosis, you may feel like you’ve developed coping skills so that you are able to get through stressful situations. In a lot of ways, you may be managing “just fine.” However, if you suspect you are neurodivergent that probably means you’re aware of some areas in your life that continue to be challenging. There may be issues you are facing that are related to undiagnosed autism or ADHD but you’ve been thinking they are part of your personality.
Many people find empowerment in receiving an official diagnosis. It can help foster a sense of greater understanding of yourself and provide a guide for how to get started on addressing areas that are challenging. A diagnosis can also provide relief in knowing that what you are coping with is not a personal shortcoming, but a difference in the way your brain is wired. With the right support, you can learn to bridge that difference to improve your enjoyment of life.
Below is a list of some free screening tools available online. These tools are not diagnostic, meaning they cannot tell you if you have ADHD or autism, but they can give you some information to help you decide if you want to seek testing from a professional who can diagnose you. A medical provider – usually a psychiatrist (M.D.), psychologist (PhD), or neuropsychologist (PhD)- uses a variety of assessments to be able to diagnose a person, as it is essential to be able to gather information about a person’s functioning in all areas of their lives throughout their lifetime.
ADHD
Adult Self-Report Scale (ASRS). This screening tool will help you recognize the signs and symptoms of adult ADHD.
AUTISM
Autism Quotient (AQ). A basic screening tool for traits of autism.
The Ritvo Autism Asperger’s Diagnostic Scale (RAADS)
The authors emphasize that it is useful in identifying autistic traits and as a screening instrument but not as a diagnostic tool.
This test is designed to be administered by a clinician in a clinical setting and as such is of limited use for self-diagnosis. At the very least, take this test with the assistance of someone who knows you well. If you suspect you may have an autism-related disorder, by all means, take this test. But do not rely on the results as absolute proof either way.

Girls Questionnaire for Autism Spectrum Condition (GQ-ASC)
This screening questionnaire is designed to identify behaviors and abilities in women that are associated with autism. (Traditionally, autism screening was based on traits seen in males. This screening tool is normed off for females and nonbinary people).
Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q)
This is an assessment that may be used to identify autistic individuals who do not currently meet diagnostic criteria due to their ability to “mask” their autistic proclivities.

What if I Don’t Want Testing?
Whatever you decide, therapy can help support you by talking through any areas in your life you feel are stressful. Helping you create strategies to make life more manageable and more enjoyable. Embarking on therapy for ADHD or autism is not just about managing symptoms—it’s about building a life you enjoy and living authentically. Finding the Right Neurodivergent Therapist
In session, your therapist is there to listen to your experience and to provide support only on areas that you would like support.
